Black Screen on MKV replay...

Hi, when I try to check a MKV file on my iMac Mojave I get audio but a black screen? any ideas how to solve this. thanks.
What are you using to play it? Does it include support for the video codec used?
If you play the file with VLC, does it still just display black?
