I'm new to this program and really enjoy what the program can do. I'm using my laptop and it has a DVD built-in so I'm able to use the program with DVD's only at this time. I do have a usb blue ray drive but for some reason the program doesn't recognize the drive. Is these something I need to do or set to be able to read it. I'm ready to pay for the program if it will function as I need it to . I'm ripping all my movies to a hard drive for easer storage and viewing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does the operating system recognize it as an optical drive?

Are you running Windows, and have you updated since October of 2019? If so, Windows will block access to hardware by "unauthorized" programs, as part of Microsoft's "ransomware protection". You'll have to authorize that access for MakeMKV. Lots of pages explain how to add exceptions.
