I uninstalled a very old version of makemkv, and installed the latest one.
Now when I run it I get this error.
Failed to validate activation key. Are you really trying to hack this application?
click ok.
then this error.
This application version is too old. Please download the latest version at
http://www.makemkv.com/ or enter a registration key to continue using the current version.
I have uninstalled, rebooted, downloaded the installer from your site again, installed, rebooted.
same error.
I've repeated this three times now, not sure what's going on.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Did you enter a registration key as instructed?

If the "very old version" was using the beta key, that is probably still being used in the registry.
Also, there have been companies that have "private labeled" (that is, pirated) MakeMKV in the past, and had their "permanent key" revoked because of it. I think that was the origin of that message.
The last time this popped up was in 2012...

I feel dumb.
I thought this software was free forever, just limited after a certain period of time.
But on the purchase page it says:
You can use shareware functionality for free during 30-days trial period. If you like MakeMKV and you want to use it after your 30-days trial version expires, you need to purchase a registration key.
I guess my 30 day trial has expired a long time ago.
Not sure why it's giving me this error though. Bug?
I know I didn't pirate it.
But my problem is solved.
30 day trial is way over, and I never bought it.
Hmmm... next paycheck maybe.
Thanks for the help all!

MakeMKV is free while in beta. There's a beta-key available in the News section you can use.

Oh I get it now.
For a programmer, sometimes I can be quite dumb.
I guess I just had an old beta key.
New beta key works perfectly!
Thanks!

During the beta, the beta key expires every couple of months. If you're using the Bluray features, you have to re-enter the current key to reset the 30-day counter.
Or you can buy a permanent key and not look back....

They're a little late on posting it for August though. Unless it's not gonna be free anymore?

The updated β is almost always late. If you find it annoying, I suggest you buy a proper key which will always work forever and ever and ever and evaaaaaar.
