MKV files lagging and shaky on VLC

I had been successfully playing 1080p MKV files on VLC for a few days. My computer was clearly powerful enough to do so. All of a sudden, the picture is horribly shaky/wavy with constant pixelation whenever an MKV file is played. Things are normal with AVI. I didn't change any settings or anything. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on?

Not much to work with. What you describe is consistent with several scenarios, the more likely one being VLC not getting data as fast as it needs to for both audio and video.
If the file itself is bad, the error will appear in exactly the same place each time it is played. If it jumps around, it's probably a bandwidth issue that depends on what ever else you have running on the machine, or network, if the files are stored on a server.
