feature request MakeMKV

Post by retrofan » Thu Sep 17, 2015 4:54 pm

Hi,

I'm very happy with MakeMKV but miss one important feature: force aspect ratio to 16:9.
Some DVD's do have wrong IFO files with 4:3 setting even the VOB files are 16:9.
Right now I have the following workaround which works great, but it would be nicer if MakeMKV could do this automatically, so the process is improved:

Load generated MKV files from MakeMKV into MKVmergeGUI (http://www.videohelp.com/software/MKVtoolnix) and change aspect ratio from default to 16:9.
Remux the file again as MKV (no encoding required!) and voilla!

It shouldn't be hard for MakeMKV to do the same I guess as the header should be adapted a little to output 16:9. Best way is to set this option in expert mode I think.

Thanks!

This has come up in the past. MakeMKV copies the contents over, it isn't "in to" modifying them. However, the fact that MakeMKV now does audio recoding, the idea of "it just makes copies" has been blown right out of the water...

The situation where the disk authors screw up the aspect ratio flags is relatively rare. There isn't just one place where the ratio is stored. Which flag is wrong, when they're in conflict?

Tools exist to fix it (as you link to). Trying to incorporate logic into MakeMKV to guess which flags the disk author got wrong probably isn't going to happen, but only Mike can answer that question.

I use the header editor of mkvmerge GUI and I'm only changing the setting for "video display width" from 768 to 1024 of the created MKV file from MakeMKV and I'm done (without re-encoding). Now I get 16:9 instead of 4:3. If MakeMKV could do the same, I don't have to use 2 programs anymore
