Single VOB file to MKV?

Post by DigitriX » Sat Jan 28, 2012 5:00 pm

Hello guys,

I have couple of promo music videos and I was wondering is there a way to transcode a single VOB file to MKV with MakeMKV?
And if not, can you recommend me some other software for transcoding single vob files to mkv ones.

Thanks in advance! :)

MakeMKV does not transcode, which means to decode and re-encode.

VOB is a container format. MKV is a container format. So what you need is to convert from one container format to another.

Have you tried "open file" on the VOB from MakeMKV?

MakeMKV might not be the right tool for the job. Perhaps mkvtoolnix would be better?

From the home page:
MakeMKV is a format converter, otherwise called "transcoder". It converts the video clips from proprietary (and usually encrypted) disc into a set of MKV files, preserving most information but not changing it in any way.
I don't want to change anything in the file, just the containers.

And yes, I tried to open the single file with MakeMKV, but it doesn't work.

Any suggestions? :?

Hello again, guys...

Today I realized that, when using mkvtoolnix, the audio track is gone.

Help? :(

There's an Mkvtoolnix thread on doom9: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=155732

Edit: and now Mkvtoolnix has its own forum -> https://www.bunkus.org/answers/

Perhaps VOB2MPG might be a good start.

Otherwise, I'm wondering if these DVDs were encoded correctly, or the audio is interleaved into the video.

VOB is different from MKV when it comes to video quality.
