DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 tracks being reported as 5.1

Post by SirYodaJedi » Thu Sep 26, 2024 4:08 pm

I've noticed this with the DTS cores from the DTS-HD MA tracks on the 2011 BD releases of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, the DTS core from the DTS-HD HR track on the 2007 BD release of Stargate, and the DTS-ES tracks from the 2005 DVD special edition of Ghost in the Shell (or rather, the 2017 rerelease of that). The 6.1 tracks are properly extracted (I think? I can't easily verify, but VLC seems to report all channels as playing), but MakeMKV incorrectly reports them as 5.1. As such, I've been using ffmpeg to extract the cores for BD tracks (which results in MediaInfo reporting the channel count correctly, unlike extracting with MakeMKV), but this isn't particularly possible for DVDs that only have the basic DTS-ES track.
