AACS Question

Post by alumpkin » Tue Sep 03, 2024 9:18 pm

I am relatively new to MakeMKV, so this may be an ignorant question.

In the past, I have not had any issues with using MakeMKV for the most part. I recently have started having issues and it appears they are related to AACS protection.

This is what I am seeing in MakeMKV:
Drive Information
OS device name: \Device\CdRom1
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE WH16NS40
Revision: 1.05
Serial number: [redacted]
Firmware date: 2120-05-06 14:40
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 76

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
Firmware type: Patched (microcode access re-enabled)
Firmware version: 1.05
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

Disc Information
Label: HARD TARGET
Timestamp: 2021-10-18 14:10:37
Protection: AACS v76
Data capacity: 38.61 Gb
Disc type: BD-ROM
Number of layers: 2
Channel bit length: 74,5 nm (25.0 GB max. per layer)
When I try to open the disc, it says it uses newer AACS protection and fails to open. But it appears on my Drive Information AACS stat line that I can do the same 76 that the disc has. I made sure that my MakeMKV is fully updated.

What am I missing?

Do you have internet access enabled in the preferences, so it can download newest key informations? Or is the download maybe blocked?

I think that would be visible in the debug log file.

As I understand it, the line about 'Highest AACS version' in the drive information section is merely stating the highest version of AACS that the drive has seen. It isn't making a statement about the drive's capabilities.

That your drive is LibreDrive enabled, however, is making such a statement. As such, I would expect that drive to be able to rip that blu-ray without a problem.

The only thing odd I notice is the Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide says to flash your drive (a WH16NS40) directly to WH16NS60 1.02mk firmware.
WH16NS40 on any Firmware directly to > WH16NS60 1.02MK
Those firmware recommendations are based on years of accumulated data about which firmware is best for ripping. I don't know if that'll change the the results in your case, but it might.

Thanks for the replies.

I guess this is closed though because I reinstalled MakeMKV this morning, restarted my computer, and it is working again. Weird...

Anyway, if I run into any more issues, I will certainly be trying to flash back to 1.02mk.

Thanks again!

Usually the only things that will cause this is makemkv not downloading the sdf and hk or the drive not fully passing through in something like a sandbox or vm.

Easiest thing to do first is try a VPN and see if it downloads.

Ok, so the MakeMKV re-install did not work over the long term. After one save, it failed again with the same AACS errors.

I tried the WH16NS60 1.02mk firmware and that did not work.

I then tried the WH16NS40 1.03mk firmware, and it is working thus far.
