Hobbit high frame rate

Post by griffinspire » Wed Jun 21, 2023 5:26 pm

help! I am looking for an optical disk that the high frame rate hobbit movies. I plan on using clips from them to help illustrate the concept of the uncanny valley in a presentation I'm doing in the fall. Since there are so many versions (extended, directors, etc) I figured this would be a good place to ask.

The issue is not the drive. The issue I am having is finding a disk with the 48 FPS version instead of the standard blueray or 4k version at 29.97 framerate.

dont think it was released in 48fps.
as almost no consumer TV could play it back without judder.
and no vrr does not work for movies yet
you would need a 144/240hz display to play it back without judder and have the benefit of 48fps
most consumer TVs are 60/120HZ native panels obviously there are many pc monitors that can do it but they probably looked at TVs at the target audience.
the new Samsung qd oleds i believe does 144 at 4K but i think at 8bit not 10bit

I think Gemini Man (2019) was released at 60 fps.

Yes it was but it's 59.94 so that's the standard for ntsc displays it can be played without judder easily 48 fps is more odd for consumer tv displays.

Darn it I was hoping I could find a retail copy of it. It must have been theater only. For reference here is a trailer of it, so I know it existed. https://youtu.be/40sMS27Ql_w

I saw it in HFR in the theater and I was put off by it. It had the soap opera effect of course. And there were a lot of gratuitous camera moves that could only be done because the scenes were completely digital. My brain kept rejecting those camera moves as fake and taking me out of the moment.

I wonder if you could use youtube-dl and download the HFR trailer?

Your brain "rejecting" it is the uncanny valley concept that I'm teaching. I'm not sure on if downloading it would preserve the frame rate or what would be lost in recompression. There is an alternative reference In film I belive but it is a conversation between geordie and data discussing why data has an unnatural skin tone. Sometime in the early tng seasons. And I'm just not enough of a trek fan to re-watch all of those. Yet..

if your teaching then just go for Gemini man 4K or Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk 4K,
plus this are easier to playback without judder as they are 59.97/.94 and thats what most tvs native refresh rates are.

The judder is actually an important part of the demonstration. To explain, the uncanny valley is a Term coined in the 1970's in the robotics field for when something artificial appears to real, the human mind rejects it. The jerk in the 48fps hobbit appears to correctly simulate humanoid movement so closely so our brains says "nope". While In Gemini Man the higher fps just unnatural enough to put us at ease.

Old thread, but there will never be a 4K UHD Bluray 48fps hobbit release, as the 4k standard does not allow 48fps content. If a future standard would, it be incompatible with all existing drives and players.
