Back To The Future 4K - Source file is corrupt? (re: new discs and brand new drive)

Post by sofakng » Thu Dec 03, 2020 9:38 pm

I've had an LG WH16NS40 for a while but put it away in storage and when I bought it out it was making grinding noises so I just purchased a brand new drive.

I've also purchased brand new Back To The Future 4K (Ultimate Trilogy). However, when I try to rip in MakeMKV 1.15.3, I've been getting different errors:

This only happened once and then didn't appear again after I restarted:

Code: Select all

udf: node fe/efe failed!
This corrupt files seem to be somewhat random but towards the middle of the ripping process:

Code: Select all

The source file '/BDMV/STREAM/00294.m2ts' is corrupt or invalid at offset 32052449280, attempting to work around
The source file '/BDMV/STREAM/00294.m2ts' is corrupt or invalid at offset 32052449280, attempting to work around
The source file '/BDMV/STREAM/00294.m2ts' is corrupt or invalid at offset 32052449280, attempting to work around
The source file '/BDMV/STREAM/00294.m2ts' is corrupt or invalid at offset 32052449280, attempting to work around
The source file '/BDMV/STREAM/00294.m2ts' is corrupt or invalid at offset 32052449280, attempting to work around
Could this brand new drive be defective or could it be another problem?

Hey! It's aggravating that no one has responded to you. I'm having the exact same issue with an LG WH14NS40 and Back To The Future 4k. No one has responded to my thread either viewtopic.php?f=16&t=25210&p=108512
I was using a UH12NS40 successfully and ripping 4k discs with no issues before I tried BTTF and it made those same grinding noises. It's the ONLY reason I bought a new drive. THAT new drive made the same grinding noises, so I returned it for another new one and I'm experiencing the same read issues with this disc.

If you're experiencing rip errors, please read here first: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=15055

There's probably more to the log that didn't make it into the post, but the optical drive is having a hard time correctly reading all the bits on the disc. There's little that MakeMKV can do about that.

The 'AV sync' messages are the result of the way the disc was authored and the use of seamless branching. You can consider them informational in nature and the result of MakeMKV doing the best job it can to put the movie back together. MakeMKV FAQ: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=24388

What about the physical noise that both of us are experiencing? It's like a crunch or vibration. I'm on my third drive (two are brand new). It only happens with Back to the Future Part 1 4k so far (parts 2 and three were perfect rips). I've successfully ripped 4k discs on all three drives without issue.

That is most likely the sound of the mechanism backing up the laser head in an attempt to read the same spot again and again to try to correctly read all the data on the disc. My drives occasionally make a sound like that too and most of the time, it means the rip is going to fail (although not always).

Sometimes there's a sound that is the vibration of a (slightly) unbalanced disc. When the drive is spinning fast (with a well balanced disc) the disc makes what can be described as an almost air rushing sound. When the disc is a little unbalanced, there's a different tone to the sounds. The sounds change or disappear when the drive spins slower.

Most likely, when it has trouble reading a spot on the disc, the spin rate slows and the head backs up to read the same spot again.

Any updates to this issue. I also have a LG WH16NS40 and am getting the same errors as above. I have ripped many other 4K movies without issue inluding coco just last week. Back to the Future is the only movie I've had issues with.

Same issue with that disc. Movies 2 and 3 of that trilogy set worked great, but the first one I get invalid and corrupt at offset.
