volume key is unknown

Can anyone explain this message in more detail:

The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted

i know its pretty self explanatory....but my scenario is that i have a lot of discs ripped to HDD with anydvd in full file and folder structure and am now using makemkv to convert to mkv.

I have hit this error on a couple of discs.

is this a sympton of using anydvd for the rip? or is it simply that there will always be some discs that we cannot decrypt?

If you are using .ISO image files created by AnyDVD, that's the source of your problem...

These are discs ripped to files and folders i.e. BDMV\STREAM

Althought interested at your post - are there issues with anydvd generated ISO's?

All are US discs. I'll grab a list of titles and post.

Yes - and that's why I stated so.

It appears that such .ISOs are "incomplete" and lack a volume ID /key. It sounds like if you want to use such an .ISO, you'd HAVE TO HAVE AnyDVD active on your system, so that it could "phone home" for the needed key.

Not exactly, as long your disc is in KEYDB file maintained by members on doom9 forum http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=120988 , you can copy this file into "AACS key directory" (set it in preferences) and MakeMKV will open that discs. Despite what is said on above-mentioned Sly thread, MakeMKV can open all blu-ray discs as long as you either have an original disc or proper backup.

As a point of information, the "keyDB.cfg" file posted at the Doopm9 Forum contains only 237 items, including several that are "same title/different region" - and, if I remember correctly, contains no discs with MKBs higher/newer than MKB 12...

It contains several v16 keys obtained by "undisclosed" means.
