are my movies MPEG-2?

Yes, I have used the search function. I want to use a Raspberry Pi with XBMC to play DVDs I have ripped using MakeMKV. They say that they cannot playback MPEG-2. The only info I can find in properties says the format is .mkv. I think that is the container but what is the format?

The format of the video is whatever was on the disc.

For DVD it'll be MPEG-2

For Blu-ray it can be either MPEG-2, h.264, VC-1 or VC-1i
