Install Latest Windows Version MakeMKV

#1 Post by myorion » Fri Aug 01, 2025 9:56 pm

I have been using the free MakeMKV for nearly 1 year and have updated the app whenever I get a new update message. Today I get the new update message, but the latest revision is the v1.18.1 here on the MakeMKV website, which was the latest installed on my computer, so I am in a viscious loop. How do I either stop the update message or get the free version later than v1.18.1?

But this is a new situation. I've been using MakeMKV for over a year now, and this is a weird bug of some kind. DVD usage is supposed to be free, and will always stay free. It's the Bluray usage that is supposed to trigger a "Need new Key" or "Need new version of the software" but not for DVDs. Or is the wording just inaccurate?

I do all my ripping on two separate computers. My laptop only has a DVD player, so I do all my DVD rips there. My desktop PC has an external Blu-ray drive I keep attached to it, so I do all my rips on it for Blu-ray.

Every so often, as expected, every month or two, I have get the new Key for the bluray drive, so I can continue. Sometimes it's a day or two, sometimes there's always one available, no problem. Sometimes, a new version of the program comes out, so I have to go and get it and install, and then sometimes also have to wait for a key..but that's expected.

With the DVDs however, every so often, when a new version of the program comes out, I'll get a message saying the version of my program is too old, I must update it. So, I do, and most of the time, it continues on its merry way.

But are we now saying that has changed, and the "free, always free, and always will be" version of the program for DVD rips is sometimes included in the new Beta key requirement as well, and I've just somehow missed the combination of a new program AND a new key at the same time? Because that's slightly confusing.

If that's the case, it's fine, but some clarification would be nice.

Thanks to all for your comments. Are any of these replies from the person responsible for maintaining the Beta Free version of MakeMKV? I hope that I am being understood that I have the Beta free version on my machine. I get a message to install the newest version of MakeMKV from the website, but the website only has the v1_18_1 version as the latest for download, which is not a newer version, it's just the same version for the last however many months.

I uninstalled the Beta free MakeMKV, then reinstalled the only Beta free version showing on the MakeMKV website, which is v1_18_1.

After reinstalling, I get the same upgrade message. This is the viscious loop I'm describing.

Best, Stephen

As far as I’m aware, Mike, who develops the software, hasn’t weighed in on this issue yet.

I have even tried purchasing the license and it isn't working. This is the first time I'm trying MakeMKV to try and burn my 4k movies, maybe I just started at a wrong time lol

Is this an issue that everyone trying to upgrade to the latest version is having? Did I miss a reply from Mike on this topic?

The issue is that the beta key for July has expired and the payment provider who handles the permanent keys has run out of preallocated keys. Nobody has been able to make contact with Mike since last month, so nobody knows what the ETA is on either beta or permanent keys.
