Questions About Using MakeMKV for Blu-ray Backups (Disc Menu)

#1 Post by KevM92 » Mon Mar 24, 2025 11:21 pm

Hi everyone,

I’m relatively new to using MakeMKV, and I’m doing my best to figure things out. If this question has already been asked, I apologize and appreciate any pointers. I’ve attempted to search for answers elsewhere, but I haven’t found anything that fits my situation.

Here’s my problem: I want to achieve the same experience with a rip or backup as if I were playing the physical Blu-ray (HD/UHD) disc in a player. The main reason for this is that I sometimes encounter issues with multi-lingual discs. Currently, I’m facing a specific issue with the German version of the Wicked UHD Blu-ray, which contains the German and English versions, as well as a "Sing-Along" version.

When I create a backup or rip (MKV files), I can access the German and English versions without any issues. However, I cannot find the Sing-Along version. Additionally, I experience problems with other multi-lingual discs, and I believe having the disc menu could or would help.

To resolve this, I attempted to create a BDMV/Backup, as I understood that this would include the disc menu. Unfortunately, Jellyfin as a player completely ignores everything except the main title, skipping the menus and bonus content. When using VLC Player to play a BDMV folder, it breaks at the disc menu.

Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to use different software? Or is there a general misunderstanding in my approach? I would greatly appreciate your input. (And please remember, my concern extends beyond just Wicked.)

Thanks, and best greetings from Germany!

Kev

P.S. I usually create MKV files for my Blu-rays, so I'm trying BDMV for this specific reason. If you have any other suggestions on why it might be beneficial to store the BDMV files as well, I would love to hear them. Could there be a benfit especially for 4k/UHD Dolby Vison / Atmos discs?

Lots of blu-ray menus use Java. You can configure VLC to use Java, but not all versions of Java work well. There are various discussions about it on this forum. Here's one: https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=168675#p168675

As for Wicked, I don't own the movie, but it is my understanding that the sing-along part is one of the subtitle tracks in the main movie.

Not sure about missing sing alongs but makemkv should have broken up the files for you when you opened it. Where you can select the individual files.
If you created a backup, the software players sometimes don't work like a hardware player. But if you burned the backup back to disc it would play in your hard bluray just fine.
I'm guessing you mean how to get it working in the software?

I was referring to the software aspect. Since I don't have a Blu-ray player in the living room, I usually use Plex and Jellyfin to play my movies. Additionally, I would have the UHD-capable drive connect to my office PC.

I have Java (JRE) already installed as MakeMKV told thru it's output to install it when I was ripping a disc - since then it works prefectly fine when ripping.
However when I created the post this was already given so I think JRE is not the issue here.
And as said it's for me not Wicked specific but if we speak about Wicked I have 4 Subtitle Tracks 1 & 2 English or German full Subtitels Text and Songs Subtitel Tacks 3&4 also marked as English or German are Empty also no songs.
