handbrake preset fails on makemkv episode

handbrake 1080p h.265 qsv preset fails on "balanced" encoding with this error:

This only occurs on Makemkv - produced episodes on one particular DVD set, and apparently only on this preset.
This handbrake preset behaves ok when used directly on this disc, or on an anydvd copy of the disk
The anydvd copy of the disk submitted to makemkv yields the same handbrake failure.

Any insight? Handbrake folks haven't come up with anything.

Are you having MakeMKV "rip to encode", or ripping first, then encoding the MKV file afterward?
