Downloaded latest version of Makemkv and I receive an error message while trying to install but I've determined it is "Avast" that is blocking installation. Temporarily disabled Avast and did the install.

If Avast is blocking the install, please submit the download URL for MakeMKV to them for review. False positives are usually corrected once they have a sample file.

Makemkv installer doesn't appear to be signed. SmartScreen complained about it. In beta that's fine; for coming out of beta, signing the installer and the program executable seems mandatory to me. I know that comes at a cost.

Well, MakeMKV is signed in a sense that you can verify authenticity of installer files with a free open-source tools, by using a hash file - http://www.makemkv.com/download/makemkv-sha-1.14.3.txt .
