Blu-Ray to MKV Choppy Playback

#1 Post by bigzaj » Wed Feb 11, 2009 3:09 pm

I used MakeMKV to create MKV's for my Band of Brothers Blu-Ray Collection. The program worked fine and took about 45min for one disc (two episodes), however the playback is choppy. Playback is using ATI 4870 with Intel Q9550 and 4gig of ram with CCCP. I have tried at 24Hz and 60Hz and the playback is the same. I have also tried Windows Meda Player and VLC for playback and it is still choppy. The video on the disc and in the resulting mkv is VC-1. Any thoughts or advice?

VC-1 is generally CPU-intense codec and has somewhat poor support in many players as of today. VLC still uses old ffmpeg build that doesn't utilize multi-core features of modern CPUs. It should get better over time but I can't give any specific advice now.

Same problem here, DVD mkv is good, but Blu-ray mkv is choppy. This on both VLC media player AND Popcorn Hour A-110.

hi mike,

just love makemkv :-)

i can confirm choppy playback, too. the original bluray m2ts-file plays perfectly without any choppy playback.
the created mkv plays choppy. it has to be makemkv because the original plays flawlessly with media player
and the created mkv does not. the CPU, player and codec are the same on both files. i also checked on dropped
frames and there are no. it might be the framerate that isn't identical with the original and therfore plays choppy.

best regards

Hi guys,

Could you please tell me what was the codec? And if you could also try to run this mkv file via MKVMerge and look if it's still choppy or not, this would really help!

Thank you!

I did MKVMerge, no change, still choppy playback:

Amy Winehouse - I tild you I was trouble
Blu-ray
VLC mediaplayer
Stream 0: codec avc1
Stream 1: codec dts

hi mike,

i also did mkvmerge and there is no change.

mkv-tracks:
wvc1 (video)
dts (audio)

is it possible that makemkv doesn't take over the original framerate?
this bug is not easy to discover and seems only to affect VC-1 tracks.
you can only recognize it if you compare both original and mkv on fast
moving scenes. i first also thought that it might be the CPU-intense
codec but the original files all play perfectly!

we can't reproduce it yet. MakeMKV uses timecodes from original elementary stream (every frame is timestamped in M2TS) so it is unlikely that it is timecode or framerate problem.

can you please do the following test:
  • extract VC-1 stream from MKV using mkvextract from mkvtoolnix
  • try to play produced file and see if it plays
  • create brand new MKV from VC1 video file using mkvmerge
  • see if it still has a problem
I suspect it might be a bug in VC1 decoding from mkv.

hello mike,

i found the error. i was right! it's MAKEMKV.
it doesn't write the correct header-information
(duration-time/framerate) into the MKV-file.
but first read on...

i have done following test:

* extract VC-1 stream from MKV using mkvextract from mkvtoolnix

DONE
mkvextract gave me following error:
Error: Track 1 with the CodecID 'V_MS/VFW/FOURCC'
is missing the "default duration" element and
cannot be extracted.

i used tsMuxeR_1.8.4(b) to extract the vc1-stream from MKV

* try to play produced file and see if it plays

DONE
doesn't play. media player and vlc can't play the pure vc1-stream.

* create brand new MKV from VC1 video file using mkvmerge

DONE

* see if it still has a problem

DONE
the new created MKV works perfectly! without any choppy playback :)

i checked both files with mkvinfo and ta-daaa:

MKVMERGE CREATED MKV@MKVINFO:
| + Codec ID: V_MS/VFW/FOURCC
| + Codec decode all: 1
| + CodecPrivate, length 77 (FourCC: WVC1, 0x31435657)
| + Default duration: 41.708ms (23.976 fps for a video track)

MAKEMKV CREATED MKV@MKVINFO:
| + Codec ID: V_MS/VFW/FOURCC
| + CodecPrivate, length 77 (FourCC: WVC1, 0x31435657)

Default duration is missing in the MAKEMKV-MKV-file!!!
