Newbie comments/question

Post by Phototaker »

This is my first posting. I only came across this website yesterday & have read many postings.
I was pleased to see that the program did exactly what it said it would.

I was a little surprised that since I read that many users of this program also use Handbrake, which I have used often before,to then make the final file smaller. Unless I missed it, I thought that you should have the option to just rip & save the file without converting to MKV. Then have the option to either let MAKEMKV make your file or save it to let another program do that job. I am aware that MAKEMKV is the name of this program.

Is there any way to set up things up so that subtitles can kept & have the ability to turn them on or off?

Thanks in advance

The point of MakeMKV is to rip the A/V files from the disc and put them into a matroska container. If you want to convert the A/V files to a different format then you would have to use a different program.

Otherwise, I really don't understand your first question. How would you rip a disc and then use a different program to save the data? Where would this data be held while waiting for another program to save it?

As for the subtitles - Subtitles have three states(more or less). The first one is default, or the primary subtitles. The next state is whether they are on or off. The final state would be if they are forced, which means they are on automatically.

VLC tends to turn default subtitle streams on automatically, while some other players do not.

You can select what subtitle streams you want to keep by selecting them in the selection window. Some discs are mastered so that forced subs are a different stream, rather than just toggled on or off in the main subtitle stream.

Hi!

Your post is not totally clear but, be advised that MakeMKV CAN rip "Full Disc" backups of Blu-ray discs without converting to .MKV...

Thats the part of the FAQ section that I missed. How is it done & do you have any options to set before this happens, like setting the bit rate or target output size?

Neither. With minor exception, it will create a DUPLICATE of the original...

Fine. I just thought that it might be good to say to rip a disc & have the ability in one procedure say take Blu_Ray file & set it to make it fit onto a 4.7 or 8.5 GB disc. I have helped a friend with his Blu-Ray holiday disc & make a copy for another who way on the same trip but doesn't own a BLU-Ray player.

Compression is NOT a function of MakeMKV. The author ("mike admin"), has stated that there are plenty of other programs already available for compression, whereas MakeMKV's stated primary purpose is to retain files in their original size...

I now that compresson isn't MakeMKV's thing. I have seen several media players however which can't cope with the very high bitrates that the absolute best programs can provide. It just seemed a shame that after spending a long time to create your file & they have to reprocess the entire file again.
