Asks for registration after first use?

I am new to makemkv. I downloaded the latest version for windows and installed. I put in a dvd and ran makemkv. It came up and started scanning the dvd. Then it crashed. I ran it again and it showed a 'beta popup' that said the application version is too old, download the latest version. Then it said I had to enter a registration key to continue using.

I uninstalled it and reinstalled. I removed the dvd. I ran it and it immediately showed the 'beta popup' again with the same message as before.

You did not mention whether or not you got the NEW KEY (posted today) and installed it. The key in the archive expired, so you have to fetch the freebie key manually.
