Connecting large and or multiple hard drives to TV

Post by Michael73 »

I've got a 14TB drive connected to the TV right now, but I need at least an 18TB drive to hold everything. So I want to get at least a 20TB drive, but options are limited at this size. I'm hoping someone can either recommend a good 20TB drive, tell me if they've had any luck connecting two drives to a TV via a USB switch, or suggest an alternative was to play the movies on TV if you think there's a better way. Thanks.

Why limit yourself to what the TV can handle? A separate unit can drive multiple TVs without issue.

Personally, I use a pair of Synology units, each with 8 or more drives plugged in. The "small" one is only 50TB, the large one is 70+ right now, with the ability to go larger if I buy larger drives. TVs are mounted around the house, and play anything on the server just fine.

There are a number of similar units available from different manufacturers, from 1 to 20+ drives. All the TV needs to be able to do is access the drives over the network. For "lesser TVs", I use Amazon TV interfaces. They're annoying because of ads, but the APPs don't show those.

I use a Plex server running on a computer in an out of the way place in my house. I'm currently using 4 hard drives on the server. The TVs, phones, iPads, laptops, etc. in my house all access the Plex server via the Plex app (or your favorite web browser) and stream content across my local network.
