Asking for some help: New to Dolby Vision rips

Post by moogerfoogers »

Hey y'all. I recently bought a TCL Q7 65" Google TV. For or the first time I'm able to watch DV content. I'm having trouble watching ripped movies in DV. They seem to all fall back to HDR10. I know DV can be a very complicated subject. But I was wondering if someone could help me out a bit.

MY SETUP

TCL Q7, external SSD plugged into USB 3 port

MEDIA PLAYER APP

Any recommendations? The standard pre installed media player app worked playing a DV sample mp4 I've linked below.

VIDEO THAT WORKS

The only DV video I've been able to play via my SSD connected directly to the tv is a demo clip. Here is a link to the file - https://drive.google.com/file/d/14QIknF ... sp=sharing

I'm interested in learning how I can convert, mux (or whatever) I need to do in order to get these MKV files to play in DV instead of falling back to HDR10 on my TCL Q7. Do I need to convert them to MP4 like the example clip that worked on my TV? I appreciate anyone's time/help in pointing me in the right direction.

PS/ I tried converting the MKV files to MP4 in FFMPEG, but that unfortunately didn't work.

Sounds like it only likes certain versions of the Dolby Vision metadata format. I think you'd need to use dovi_tool to convert it, but I'm not sure of the specifics. Apparently it only like the 05.09 version?

Not sure if I found the correct one, but https://www.tcl.com/us/en/products/home ... tv-65q750g states:
High Dynamic Range Format

HDR PRO+, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, HLG
So not very specific about versions there
