Multiple video angles question (Star Trek: TOS)

Post by Sidrack »

Hey folks, have you tried to use MakeMKV with Star Trek: TOS (Blu-ray)? This specific release features multiple angles on all episodes. You have the choice between watching them with or without the new special effects that were made for this.

I have the unencrypted files stored (AACS directory not present) in my HDD. When MakeMKV opens the file index.bdmv located on the BDMV folder (should I open that one or MovieObject.bdmv ? Or maybe another from the folders AUXDATA/BACKUP/BDJO/CLIPINFO/JAR/META/PLAYLIST? It can't be the STREAM folder since MakeMKV didn't recognized any files readable from there.

Anyway, when I open index.bdmv on MakeMKV, that's the report:
File 00000.mpls (angle 1) was added as title #0
File 00000.mpls (angle 2) was added as title #1
File 00001.mpls (angle 1) was added as title #2
File 00001.mpls (angle 2) was added as title #3
File 00002.mpls (angle 1) was added as title #4
File 00002.mpls (angle 2) was added as title #5
File 00003.mpls (angle 1) was added as title #6
File 00003.mpls (angle 2) was added as title #7
File 00009.mpls was added as title #8
File 00300.mpls was added as title #9
File 00301.mpls was added as title #10
File 00143.m2ts was added as title #11
File 00144.m2ts was added as title #12
File 00145.m2ts was added as title #13
File 00146.m2ts was added as title #14
File 00147.m2ts was added as title #15
File 00148.m2ts was added as title #16
File 00160.m2ts was added as title #17
File 00161.m2ts was added as title #18
File 00162.m2ts was added as title #19
File 00163.m2ts was added as title #20
File 00164.m2ts was added as title #21
File 00167.m2ts was added as title #22
File 00169.m2ts was added as title #23
File 00173.m2ts was added as title #24
File 00175.m2ts was added as title #25
File 00176.m2ts was added as title #26
File 00180.m2ts was added as title #27
File 00203.m2ts was added as title #28
And look at this picture:

Since I wasn't sure what should be selected (and as you can see, the second angle from each episode, along with the DTS-HD Losless english audio), are always disabled by default. Same goes for the DD 2.0 english audio. That's when I had the idea to select everything you are seeing in the picture above, except for the dubbed tracks (spanish/french). My primary goal was to remove those dubbing tracks, and that's all. But in the end, MakeMKV generated a folder with 59.4 GB:

The original BDMV/STREAM had 34.4 GB. Which means that instead of using a single MKV, MakeMKV created two, one for each angle.

But what should I do in this case? I mean, should I select the DD 2.0 english track as you can see in the picture? What about the DTS-HD tracks? And the 2nd angle? I don't want anything at all left out.

And as far as I am concerned, each episode has all those tracks:
English: DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1
English: Dolby Digital Mono
French: Dolby Digital Mono
Spanish: Dolby Digital Mono
But it would appear that MPC-HC is offering me two of those tracks to be selected as you can see below:

Once again, that was how I did while using MakeMKV:

Some things I noticed: The extra features are pixelating (using MPC-HC and DXVA), plus they are making any player crashes when you start jumping to another time. I didn't noticed this bug with the main episodes, using 1920x1080 res., only with those 720x480 (SD). Codec used is VC-1, for all of them. It looks like the extra features are somehow unstable to be played. In this case, there's no second angle. Please check that for yourself.

Plus, there's no sign of the subtitles embedded on any of the MKV files generated. They can't be displayed, using MPC or BSPlayer PRO. Any idea how can we fix it? I tried to use (and disable VobSub), plus changing between VMR-9 renderless and VMR-7, and no luck.

Hi!

The subs are there. Read the following thread:

I did what was said in that thread and it worked, but are all those steps really necessary? Can we expect in the future to see that bug fixed? It seems a lot of work (if you are dealing with more than a couple of videos).

A question: muxing another MKV copy (using Mkvmerge) with those generated SRTs from SupRIP will reencode the original MKV or that will be like doing a Direct Stream Copy on AVI using VirtualDub? *

* When you do a DSC you don't change anything in the video bitrate/image quality, contrary to "Full Processing Mode".

I was going to ask the same question for MakeMKV, but I guess since you recommended on the Doom9 board, there's no reencode either.

And about the video pixelating, I strongly believe it was related to the VobSub filter in conflict with the new MPC-HC filter called "MPEG-2 Video DXVA". When we use VobSub to display subtitles, the DXVA feature doesn't work (I guess it fits in the rule that says no video filter should be used if DXVA is going to work, otherwise it will be disabled). Since it was activated, both filters were probably fighting each other. I disabled "MPEG-2 Video DXVA" and the new MKV worked with MPC (not with BSP, but I wasn't having any luck displaying M2TS there either).

Now the extra feature video seems stable and displaying the 2 SRTs I embedded in the new MKV. The only thing I noticed strange is a green screen that lasts for less than 0,5 second when we change subtitles while the video is playing.
