Makemkv and networked optical drives

Post by matt198t »

Is this possible or do you have to launch makemkv from the computer that has the Blu-ray drive physically attached?

Probably been asked a gazillion times before, apologies

A lot would have to do with what interface the network presents for MakeMKV - does it allow for direct communication with the drive? If not, you are relying upon software in between that can interfere with things like AACS key exchanges and region decoding on DVDs.

Some copy protection measures are at the operating system level, and some at the hardware level.

I have installed a bluray drive into my server. Mapped network drive so its controllable/accessible from main computer.
However, I am unable to select this drive through 'Source' on makemkv ran from main computer. Only local drive is selectable.

That means the local machine doesn't think the remote drive is an optical drive. You would probably need a special driver to make it work.

I have read about (but not seen) drivers that can make network resources look like they're USB-attached to the local machine. It requires software on both ends to make it happen.

I don't think Mike has MakeMKV coded to even TRY to rip from non-optical drives. But only he can answer that.
