MakeMKV Subtitle Issue

Post by gamekommander »

I have a .mkv file with subtitle options embedded into the file itself. However, when I open the file in MakeMKV only the audio options are shown. Below is the log. Im guessing that the subtitle tracks were #4 and 5 and were skipped for some reason?

"MakeMKV v1.9.1 win(x64-release) started
The program can't find any usable optical drives.
Track #4 of type S_TEXT/ASS in MKV file is not recognized and was skipped.
Track #5 of type S_TEXT/ASS in MKV file is not recognized and was skipped.
Operation successfully completed"

What are you trying to accomplish?

If you are trying to manipulate an existing MKV file, search for "mkvtoolnix" to find a better tool. MakeMKV is intended for getting data off of DVDs and BDs, which normally won't have text-based subtitles.

If you're trying to burn the subtitles in, visit handbrake.fr and look at Handbrake.

Ultimate goal is to run the file through Handbrake for video conversion with the Japanese audio and English subtitles. I seem to get the audio fine. However, when I try to run the file "as is" through Handbrake, enabling subtitles, the subtitles don't show up. One suggestion I had read was to just run the mkv file through MakeMKV first but I dont see any subtitle options in MakeMKV. There are definitely subtitles embedded on the file because I see them in the media info on VLC.

I know that ASS/SSA subtitles within an MKV are recognized by Handbrake, because worked with them. None of those were created by MakeMKV, though... I have files here that combine BD video, DVD audio, and both ASS and DVD subtitles, all of which processed fine in Handbrake. Kind of happens when you get the Japanese BDs before they're released in the US.... then don't want to pay BD prices again when the English dub comes out.

Anything that MakeMKV would be able to do with such subtitles, though, can also be done with the tools in mkvtoolnix, and mkvtoolnix allows MUCH finer control over the results.

It appears there are two English SSA tracks. Not sure exactly the three different checkboxes in Handbrake but they aren't showing up in the preview.
