P90X DVD issues

Post by peptopro »

I want to watch the DVDs via a USB stick instead of DVD on my TVs, so I thought I would give Makemkv a try. The first 6 discs were ok, but now on 06-Kenpo and 07-XStretch (I havnt tried 08 and later) I get "0 titles saved, 1 failed" on each title. Below is the log, if I need to provide anything else I can

MakeMKV v1.8.7 win(x64-release) started
Using direct disc access mode
Title #1 has length of 2 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped
Title #1/2 has length of 2 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped
Title #1/3 has length of 2 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped
Cells 50-end were skipped due to cell commands (structure protection?)
Title #4 was added (49 cell(s), 1:05:12)
Cells 50-end were skipped due to cell commands (structure protection?)
Title #6 was added (49 cell(s), 1:05:12)
Cells 50-end were skipped due to cell commands (structure protection?)
Title #72 was added (49 cell(s), 1:05:13)
Title #97 has length of 88 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped
Operation successfully completed

Is this the log from the "output window", or did you activate debug logging, as shown in the page linked in my signature?

Debug logging can show things that are normally left out of the output window.

Sorry for the delay. In the meantime, I purchased another piece of software that read the DVDs fine, although I hated the output quality. mp4 vs mkv
I tried to attach the log but it would not let me (Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached.) So below is a copy and paste job

The key is right here:
002003:0000 Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading '/VIDEO_TS/VTS_03_1.VOB' at offset '1347584'
That is the drive telling MakeMKV that it can't read part of the disk.

Check for smudges and scratches in the surface. I typically clean any disk that fails first read attempt with a water-based wax (Pledge in a pump spray), which fixes a lot of minor problems.

The DVD is brand new and only read from a few times from the same drive. It also looks brand new, nothing on the surface.
Like I mentioned, I tried another program and it read from the disc fine, its just the output quality from that software was horrible.

Depending upon the software, it may be simply skipping over the bad spot - this is what hardware players do, since most people won't notice a minor "skip" in the video.

But ripping software strives to make a bit-for-bit copy of the file, so a bad sector isn't tolerated.

You can try increasing the retry count on MakeMKV; this sometimes helps, as a drive will be commanded to try harder to read the disk, essentially. I have multiple drives, including DVD-only drives, on 3 different computers, because sometimes the alignment and even the color of the laser makes a difference (had that in the last 24 hours with one disk out of a series of 20) when things get marginal.

But, if the drive says it can't read a sector, MakeMKV isn't going to lie to you and say everything is fine. It will report the error, and move on.

Thanks. I used that other program real fast (that i bought unfortunately) just to get a list of all the titles. when i was making a copy a while back, i just ran thru the process without noticing what i was ripping from the DVD. There are 100 titles in the DVD it told me, and it automatically recommended 48. So I moved over to makeMKV and looked at the list it created that i could save. There were 11 in the list, but i didnt even realize that if you just click any of them in the list, it tells you the title info on the right. Well the 8th one down happened to be title 48. So i just tried saving it, and it created title08.mkv successfully.
I tried the other 10 in the list, but only a few actually saved without error. Those few didnt have the full 60 minute work out. It had about 40 minutes of the correct one, then about 20 minutes of some other random track. But 48 happened to be the one and it looks awesome, thanks.
Now I just need software that can edit these files. I had done video/audio editing in the past, but it has been a while, and never on MKVs. Goldwave, which I have used for years, actually found the audio. But its barely .2 dbs. I have used TMPGEnc for video, but he only finds audio. There has to be software out there somewhere that will bump up the audio and let me do a crop job on these things.

Title #48 was added (55 cell(s), 1:01:36)
Cells 2-6 were skipped due to cell commands (structure protection?)
Jumped to cell 7 from cell 62 due to cell commands (structure protection?)
Loop detected. Possibly due to unknown structure protection.
CellWalk algorithm failed (structure protection is too tough?), trying CellTrim algorithm
Fake cells occupy 48% of the title - assuming fake title
Cells 2-6 were skipped due to cell commands (structure protection?)
Cells 62-end were skipped due to cell commands (structure protection?)

Bumping the audio level can be done with tools like Handbrake (from handbrake.fr); you can assign tracks an adjustment level for when they are processed. But handbrake works on entire files, transcoding them from to more efficient compression methods. If you want to actually edit the file (rearrange parts, etc.), that takes more advanced tools.

This latest build fixed an issue with one of the discs. 3 others still will not rip.
I took an ISO of one of the discs, if i could upload it to someone, maybe a developer.

/onlinehelp/testdump.html should be as good as an ISO. Upload one for each failinbg disc to e.g. Dropbox or similar, and send the links by emails to support@makemkv.com

Mike is usually quiet about it. I have my own site that I post logs to, and just monitor for when they're accessed. If there are questions, he'll ask.

If you referenced this topic when sending him the link, he's most likely to respond here.
