Quick confirmation for newbie please!

Hi all,

I have a quick couple of questions if you wouldn't mind

Q1: When you first run makemkv it dumps to a 40gb(ish) backup folder with lots of random bits and pieces - this is an uncompressed full copy of the blu ray, all titles, menus, audio, the lot?

Q2: Later on, I opened the index file from makemkv and selected the title and audio I wanted, click 'make' and then a 15gb mkv - this is a compressed(?) but lossless copy?


I am used to audio and have built a library now of flac files etc, so I like the fact that flac is lossless but still sports some compression. I am now essentially trying to achive the same thing with my blu-ray and dvd's.
So if using makemkv is effectively generating me my lossless flac, then great.

Lossless, yes, compressed, no. The size difference is due to the removal of everything that's not in the selected title (extras, etc.), as well as audio tracks not in the favorite language (as set in MakeMKV preferences), and so on.

Video on Blu-ray discs is already compressed using lossy compression. Re-encoding using lossless compression would generate larger files (for an audio analogy, a FLAC-encoded audio file is smaller than the source if the source is uncompressed - like WAV - but much larger than an MP3 file).

Thanks for the answer, I guess I need to decide then if it is worth using another program then to apply compression with.

Out of interest, I presume it makes no difference to my finished output if I start with the makemkv 'backup' folder or the makemkv single mkv file to work with? As either contains the orginal blu-ray source data.

I guess something like handbrake or ripbot264 should do the job. I think which ever handles subtitles better, the makemkv subtitles handling confuses me a bit so I need to read up on it.

Subtitles are a pain in the backside, as it seems every studio wants to handle them differently on every disc.

Handbrake can handle PGS subtitles, but I don't know about RipBot.

It doesn't matter for Handbrake whether you go from the disc back up, or the ripped files.
