Subtitles ALWAYS on by default (WDTV)

Post by Solefields »

Hi everyone, this is my first post and I thank you for reading it.

I have done a search for my query, and even though there are some similar threads I can't seem to find a resolution.

I recently got hold of a WDTV Media Player and a 1TB WD MyBook external HDD. My main purpose for it is to play DVD backups. After researching I found out about MakeMKV and it has been very efficient and easy, no doubt the best workflow to get DVDs backed up in a universal format.

Anyway, I have used MakeMKV to backup a couple dozen of my DVDs, and I have deselected the audio tracks I don't need, and only left the English subtitle tracks enabled. Most DVDs rip fine, and I have a .mkv file. When I play the file back through the WDTV a subtitle track displays by default. I then tested the files in VLC and the subtitles displays by default in that too.

This is very irritating and is making me feel like I'm doing something wrong. I'm sure I've had .mkv's in the past from other sources that contain subtitle tracks, but don't display them by default. I want to keep the subtitle track in the file, but I do not want it to be displayed by default. Has anyone else found out how to stop this from happening? I'm assuming there is something I am doing wrong in MakeMKV.

I would be very grateful to anyone who can help with this. If you need any more details please ask and I'll update this thread. Thanks!

Taken from WDTVForum.com where another user has the same problem: http://wdtvforum.com/main/index.php?topic=356.0

"Uh... just turn off subtitles in the settings menu. Then subtities will not be shown by default when you start playback; they will only be shown if you bring up the playback menu and activate them."

I have tested this with the NTSC DVD of Cocktail (1988) on WDTV and it solved the problem you were having.

Thank you so much, that has solved my problem. I'm surprised this option would be on by default in the settings though. WD should probably consider this when they update the firmware again.

I wish you all the best.
