Reading a directory
Reading a directory
So I have been having hit-and-miss issues with MakeMKV and Windows 10 with an external DVD. Sometimes, Windows suspends the USB devices (there's a known issue for this) which causes a MakeMKV backup to fail. So, I thought, why not copy the entire Blu Ray DVD to a folder and then open the folder with MakeMKV. That doesn't seem to work either (MakeMKV "fails to open the Blu Ray"). Any suggestions on how to fix either of these issues so that I can rip my discs? Again, sometimes it works but most of the time it doesn't. Clearly MakeMKV needs a function that pauses the backup until the disc can be "reconnected" if it's an external USB device and gets suspended, rather than failing the backup.
Re: Reading a directory
First would be to fix Windows disconnecting the drive.
How are you connecting the USB drive? Is it POWERED by USB?

Re: Reading a directory
Yes it's powered by USB. BUT, when I copy the entire disc using Windows Explorer, the drive DOES NOT time out or suspend, only when MakeMKV is using it. I also have the same problem with Mac OS (Sierra). I've tried using a powered USB hub (so hub that has an AC adapter), but that doesn't fix the problem. Again, I want to reiterate that this is sporadic. Sometimes I'll go 7,8,9,10 tries and the backup will eventually succeed but that's a lot of wasted time and effort. I have also set the power properties (in Device Manager) for all of my generic USB hub devices to "do not suspend." That's probably what fixed allowing me to copy the entire disc to a folder on my HD. Still, MakeMKV loses connection to it.
Re: Reading a directory
Windows Explorer is limited in how fast it can read ANYTHING, not just optical disks.
Make sure the USB drive has "full power" available. If it is plugged into a hub, make sure it is a hub with its own power supply.
MakeMKV can spin drives to their published limits. And USB drives are limited by the power available. Spin too fast, the drive shuts down and goes off-line. Windows doesn't like that for some reason.

Re: Reading a directory
I don't believe drive spinning is the problem. It usually bombs about halfway into the backup as if Windows doesn't recognize that MakeMKV is using the drive and suspends it. It may be the drive itself as well (an LG Blu Ray). The problem here is that it's not consistent. Something is happening periodically that causes the drive to drop from Windows and Mac OS Sierra and the backup to fail. This happens BOTH when the drive is plugged directly into the computer's USB and when it's plugged into a powered USB hub. And, again, I am able to copy the disc no problem (from optical drive to hard drive) on both Mac and Windows. The drive NEVER stops working or being recognized by the OS. I stress again that this is probably a MakeMKV issue and that future versions of the app should include a "pause" feature in the event that a drive drops off the OS.
My other question is this, "why can't MakeMKV perform the backup action from a directory?" I copied the entire disc to a folder and then tried to run MakeMKV on that. It starts off and then eventually bombs saying it, "can't read the Blu Ray disc." Any thoughts on that?

Re: Reading a directory
Thanks for that link. Kind of silly, I hadn't thought about making an iso of the disc and then mounting in a virtual drive. That's a good idea and I'll just do that. Thanks again for all your help.
