MKV's showing as HEVC codec

Post by Shooter3k »

When I use MakeMKV to create an MKV from a file or disk, for some reason the video format/codec always shows up as "HEVC" ..... which is later throwing off some applications I have running that are looking for 'non hevc' files.

I've search the forums and haven't come up with much. Can someone help me understand why this is happening? Is there a way to have the MKV files not be created as HEVC?

This is a paste from MediaInfo but other applications (like VLC) report the same HEVC codec.

Pretty much any UHD disk will report HEVC, because they're encoded as h.265 on the disk. Non-UHD disks will show a variety of encodings, with h.264 and VC-1 rather common.

Thanks for that info.

I realize this isn't an MakeMKV question but hopeful you guys already know the answer; is there any way to determine the 50GB UHD HEVC files vs the 25GB re-encoded/compressed HEVC files?

I'm rather sure the line "Writing library : libmakemkv v1.15.2 (1.3.10/1.5.2) win(x64-release)" gets rewritten from your encoder when you reencode. I know Handbrake does (like "Writing application : HandBrake 1.3.0 2019110900")
