Help me fix my slow read speeds! No progress bar

Post by neobmw7 »

Hi all,

I've been using MakeMKV for last year and a half and this is the first time I'm running into reading problems.

Summary of problem:
1. The MakeMKV program and disc reader appear to have no problem identifying the titles on the discs.
2. Once download of selected titles starts, the drive speeds up to 2x-4x reading speed. However there is no progress bar indicator.
3. The read speed then slows down to .7x about a minute and a half into the download and stays there for the duration. Once a title incredibly near completion the progress bar becomes active for a few seconds and shoots up to a quarter completion (if I was downloading 4 titles from the disc).
4. Ultimately the program finishes (however this is now taking hours instead of minutes as it was before).

Specs:
Windows 10: 64-bit
i7 processor, 16gb ram
ASUS BW-16D1X-U
MakeMKV v1.14.5

Solutions tried:
1. Uninstalling the drive/reader from device manager
2. Checking driver updates
3. Uninstalling and reinstalling MakeMKV
4. Installing previous version of MakeMKV

Suggestion: Visit https://makemkv.com/download/old/ and pull a copy of version 1.12.3. Install it as a separate copy; do NOT let it remove your current version, and specify a new install directory, like "MakeMKV1123" or similar.

Try the rip with the old version. I have run into a DVD disk that "pauses" like you're describing, and won't rip, with v1.14.5, but works fine with 1.12.3.

If this one DOES rip with the old version, follow the instructions in the FAQ in my signature, and send the requested information to support@makemkv.com for Mike to look at. He will probably ask for some additional information.

Woodstock,

I followed all of your instructions and this appears to have solved the problem on my DVDs (i.e., downloading the previous version and specifying a different directory did the trick). I did try v1.14.5 with blu rays and the read speed and progress bar are not affected (i.e., no problems), seems like it's just with the DVDs. Thanks so much for your help. I'll follow up with the reporting as you mentioned.
