Single movie has several titles

Post by Thijs »

I'm converting my set of Cadfael Dvd's to mkv files.
Each DVD contains one episode of the series.
With most Dvd's I get one title and therefore one mkv file.
On a few Dvd's the program says it has 5 titles and creates 5 mkv files for one episode.
What is going wrong?

Are you dealing with a movie, or an episodic series?

DVDs and BDs can be authored in weird ways. Some will put all episodes in a single file, and use menu entries to jump to specific scenes which are the start of each episode. Some use a single file, but also have individual titles that point to parts of that file. And some are authored with a separate file for each episode.

MakeMKV is going to present you with whatever the author put on the disk, which may not seem right. But there are tools to split the file at chapter boundaries to give you individual files, and you can use the "manualdvd" mode of MakeMKV to do that, too.

Late answer, but it took some time to investigate.

For some strange reason to problem did not exist when I tried it another time with the problematic Cadfael Dvd's.

However the problem persists with the DVD’s of the Midsomer Murders series (Dutch version).
Each DVD holds one episode of the series which should create one .mkv file, but MakeMKV splits it into 5 separate titles (each having 5 chapters).
When playing the DVD with MPC-HC one sees it plays each title (domain) separate but automatically continues over the titles to play complete movie.

I tried to combine the separate mkv files into one with MKVTooolNix GUI, but the combined file only plays the first title.

A separate issue is the wish to have 2 language preference options in the settings page. Our country has mostly movies in their original language with subtitles. For most movies I have to select a sound track because only the subtitle track is marked.

I would suggest following the steps listed in the FAQ in my signature below and sending the files to support@makemkv.com for Mike to look at. He would be in the best position to make suggestions, which will likely include making use of MakeMKV's Manual DVD mode.

As for language selections, I would recommend not using the "preferred language" option (leave it blank), unless you are using an Advanced Mode default selection rule, for just the problem you are encountering. Until Mike implements something like a "preferred language list", it's all we have when you have multi-lingual disks. :(

Be sure to use the "append" choice when you wish to play files in sequence.
