Price too high

Post by ArieOTeD »

LS,

I have been using this program for some time now. I have converted most of my movies to MKV, so I can watch them on my tablet too.

I am certainly willing to pay for software I enjoy and use frequently, but € 50 (over € 60 including tax) is really too steep. When I tell my wife I just paid over € 60 for this program, I will sleep on the couch for several weeks.

I'm sure more people would be inclined to buy this program at a price of about € 25. I know I would.......

I also used it for free for a long while and finally decided to do the right thing and support it by buying a license. Think about how many times you use it then decide if it's the right thing for you; you'll probably find it is. Maybe set a bit aside every month or two for a year...just a thought...

As for pricing, that is the price of entry. I wish many things were cheaper but they're not and suggesting a reduction is, IMHO, not fair to the creator/producer/owner.

I think MakeMKV is a great program. I mean no disrespect to the maker, but I appeal to the maker of the program to reconsider his pricing.

The program is simple to use, endresults are great. I can imagine lowering his price would piss off people who already bought the licence key, but € 60 is a serious amount of money. I think it is better to sell 1000 licence keys for € 30 including taxes then 50 for € 60.

There are alternatives, the best one is waiting for another beta key. I think I'm fair to the author of the program when I say I will buy the program for € 30 including taxes. I will not pay € 60. The alternative is waiting for another beta key, and not pay at all.

Hi,

This topic comes up every now and again, usually around the Beta key refresh time, as there's been a delay with the key being released the last couple of cycles. A search for "cost" or "price high" should come up with the vast majority of threads.

There are a couple of options, which have already been brought up:
  • Buy a key. You've already mentioned the price is too much (in your opinion)
  • Wait for the new Beta Key. Most people will end up doing this. A workaround is to set your system clock back a couple of days, load MakeMKV, then set the clock back - this will allow it to load.
Mike has allowed the program to be used free of charge while in Beta. It'll probably be in Beta for a while, so the option to buy a key is less appealing to a lot of people than spending $50 / your local currency. Currently, the advantage of the key being always valid, without having to update it every two months, and living without the delays in the new beta key, are worth the price to others, myself included.

There's arguments for and against each side - why spend the money on a software you can use for free / supporting the developer allows it to be polished further and more features added etc. Overall, the price has been set at its current amount because that's what Mike has deemed to be a fair price for the amount of work that goes on with it - it's been in development for about 8 years (judging by the copyright on the main page), and still isn't forcing people to buy the program, still classing it as beta.

The final choice to buy or not is up to you. However, it is unlikely that it will be reduced in price - as long as I've been around, it has stayed the same. Personally, I knew I'd be buying it eventually, so buying it sooner only added value and convenience for me. However, I know it's not always a possibility for others to buy it as well, due to varying circumstances.

Price is set by Mike. Bitching about it hasn't changed his mind in the years I've been here.

Since these topics often get into name calling, they are being locked from now on.
