just a small question by a codec/video/format newbie to clarify: if makemkv states "Video: mpeg2" or "Codec: mpeg2" there should be no problems? If its VC1 makemkv would display it...?

So glad I found this thread; this problem was driving me nuts. I got hundreds of mkv files ripped with MakeMKV from DVDs and Blurays and every so often one of them would just stop playback in XBMC.
I tried the suggestion of running the offending files through mkvmerge, and that seems to do the trick, at least for the three bad files I tried so far. I don't know if the problem is with MakeMKV or XBMC, but at least now I have a workaround.
