MakeMKV, DVDfab rips, and me.

Post by Lunk42 »

I've previously digitized about half of my DVD collection. At the time, I was using DVDfab to dump whole discs to my hard drive as VIDEO_TS folders. After discovering MakeMKV and deciding that was a more convenient format to store most movies in, I recently decided to finish the job. I ripped the remaining discs with MakeMKV and then I figured I'd convert the old rips to have everything in one format, but I was greeted by this error: "It appears you are opening the disc processed by DvdFab/MacTheRipper which is known to produce damaged VOB files. Errors may follow - please use the original disc instead."

In most cases, I've packed away the discs that were already converted, not to mention that the conversion process happens a lot faster when I can just work off the HD without having to fumble around with discs and deal with my drive's slower read speeds. I can use the original discs, but it would be much, much more convenient if I didn't have to.

My question is: at what point in the process will it become apparent if there is an error? I haven't encountered any obvious errors yet after converting a few movies and spot-checking the finished product, but I haven't sat and watched any of them in their entirety yet. Will MakeMKV spit out an error while it's processing the files, or is it possible to perform a seemingly successful conversion only to discover something really screwy occurs an hour into the movie?

If it's the former, I'll just proceed as planned and then figure out what to do later if I do encounter any errors with a few movies. But I don't want to think I've got a working copy and then sit down to watch it six months or a year from now and find that it becomes unwatchable halfway through or something.

Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks for your time, and for the excellent program. :)

When the conversion fails. Generally, if there are no error messages then there is nothing to worry about. The warning you're getting tends to produce false positives - MakeMKV detects a specific signature that certain DVDfab/MacTheRipper versions were injecting into IFO files, but not all versions have the bug. All broken discs have this signature but not all discs with this signature are broken.

So as long as MakeMKV appears to have done its thing without any errors everything is most likely fine, even if I haven't confirmed it by actually watching the video in its entirety? Perfect, just what I was hoping for. Thanks for the quick and informative reply!

I have a bunch of discs that were copied using DVDFab. Is there any way I can stop this warning from popping up?
