Volume key unknown - for every disk

Post by powderkeg »

I saw this message recently and thought it was an issue specific to that title. But it is now coming up with every BD I try to access (there are loads of SCSI error lines - i just copy the last two):

Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:COPY PROTECTION KEY EXCHANGE FAILURE - AUTHENTICATION FAILURE' occurred while issuing SCSI command A30..0020074C100720..0C1DAFDFB88816F00C7471B17B182EC5444 to device 'DASPI:IODASPIService:210498894975b31c:'
Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:COPY PROTECTION KEY EXCHANGE FAILURE - KEY NOT ESTABLISHED' occurred while issuing SCSI command AD010..0800024C0 to device 'DASPI:IODASPIService:210498894975b31c:'
Can't read AACS VID from disc - most likely current AACS host certificate is revoked by your drive
The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted
Failed to open disc

I have also tried to access a BD I have successfully ripped before, and the same error has come up. So it is not the disks that are to blame. I need to fix this, but how?

As a wild guess, you recently tried to rip Total Recall on BD, after which you can no longer rip BDs, and you're running version 1.7.71 on a Mac.

Upgrade to 1.7.10

I am running 1.7.10 and no, I haven't been anywhere near 'Total Recall'.

...but yes it is a Mac. Thanks, keep the suggestions coming.

You need to recall which particular disc started this error (search this site for "AACS drive revocation"). When you launch MakeMKV, on the first screen it shows AACS version in "Protection" field. Please report the highest version you've seen, especially if you've seen version greater than v37 .

The disc was Looper. I can't find the AACS version number anywhere – there is no startup window with this information on the Mac version of MakeMKV.

Found it - on the left of the main window, not the right. Beasts of the Southern Wild is AACS v34; I can't tell you about Looper because I don't have the disk to hand.

Hehe, and I ripped a disk no later than last night. I guess I just ignore it, since MakeMKV works with all of my discs.

Re: Looper, my guess is that it's the culprit, so you'll want to get your hands on it.

Looper is fairly old disc and MakeMKV 1.7.10 supports AACS up to v38. Are you sure you're running 1.7.10? Please double-check.

You are quite right. I was looking at the 'About Window' and seeing 1.7.10 - but did not realise that it was under 'Latest Available version'. (To be honest I have not seen software version information presented like this before, and most of the software I use regularly has auto-updating; these appears to be some more of the 'foibles' of MakeMKV - I could mention others...!) I have updated to 1.7.10 and the drive is now working correctly again. Many thanks.

Well, when dealing with Beta software, do you WANT it to auto-update? :)

Fair point! On the other hand, the updating process I mean is the sort that alerts you to an available update and then asks if you wish to proceed. Anyway MakeMKV works so well generally that I am liable to forget it is beta.
