Possible Bug Report: MakeMKV 1.18.3 for Windows

Possible Bug Report: MakeMKV 1.18.3 for Windows

I downloaded MakeMKV 1.18.3 (beta) for Windows and been happily ripping my DVDs on an older Dell XPS 8930 until last Tuesday. I knew things were really fouled up when I couldn't even re-rip previously ripped DVDs! Since Tuesday, I've been getting errors, lockups, failures, etc. while trying to rip DVDs. I tried various things to investigate, including: Trying other software, running diagnostics, reinstalling software and drivers, etc. Then I checked the Windows 11 update list. The list contained three updates since last Tuesday. I uninstalled all three of them and am happily ripping along again.

I'm not sure which of the updates was the culprit. If one of the support staff would like me to further investigate, please reply here. On the other hand, it's entirely possible that I'm late to the party and this is already a known issue . . .

Interesting. What exactly are the three updates? (Not a staff member or anything. Just an intrigued nobody.)

Btw is the drive connected to a SATA port or a USB bridge? (Or is it a portable drive?)

Dunno. I uninstalled all three w/o recording the numbers. However, today MakeMKV is again having trouble ripping. I see that I have also have "Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB5089549)" auto installed. I don't know if that's on of the original three or not.

I will note that I was able to get ripping again on some DVDs by just running MakeMKV as administrator, rather than uninstalling the update.

PS: The drive is an internal SATA.

Still having issues . . . after successfully ripping a few DVDs, I started having issues again. When I checked, I see that KB5089549 is back again.

It looks like Windows 11 tries to install updates whenever the computer is idle for more than a short period . . .

Same here, since the Security KB5089549 update to Windows 11 I can no longer rip with MKV.

Being curious again: what's the exact errors in the log? Does it fail like it cannot begin the ripping process at all, or does it fail like errors show up at some point in the middle of the process? And does running as admin help this time?

Btw, does playback with VLC fail as well?

1) Some ancient DVDs still rip. Most DVDs newer than about 20 years do not.
2) Running as administrator appears mandatory.
3) Problem disks often fail to open. Sometimes they open if I try a second time.
4) If the disk opens, sometimes it will rip -- sometimes it takes multiple tries.
5) KB5089549 seems to be the culprit. I can uninstall it, but it seems to reinstall next time the computer goes to sleep.
6) Log posted below.

7) Sometimes the DVD looks like it rips, but MakeMKV says it can't save the file.
