Feature: Playlist deselect referenced m2ts files

Post by oxool »

I often see many blu rays that reference many stream/m2ts files, and I want to backup the playlist(s) that are appropriate but ignore the stream/m2ts files that are referenced leaving only the unreferenced stream files also backed up (as they are not in any playlist).

Aside from a global toggle all/none I don't see a way to (for example) right mouse click on a playlist and "unselect referenced segments". Right now I have to copy and paste all the segment names in a playlist then go through the list an uncheck the m2ts files that are referenced in a playlist. This would be incredibly easy for makemkv to do but tedious and error prone for a user to do.

I don't believe this feature is available unless someone has a good option as only selecting the playlists does not achieve my goal.

Out of curiosity, why? Looking for .m2ts files that aren't referenced by .mpls files suggests you're looking for 'easter eggs' or other hidden content on a disc, right?

I think he just wants to save space. if it's not referenced by a playlist, the bluray itself will arguably never play it (as it just plays playlists). Therefore its just "junk" the authoring software added, so why nto remove it?

just a guess though.

You’re right — MakeMKV currently doesn’t have a feature to automatically unselect M2TS segments referenced by selected playlists. Selecting playlists alone won’t exclude their underlying segments, so manual unchecking is unfortunately the only option right now. It’s a reasonable feature request, though.

Ah… I think I understand what the OP is asking for. I agree it is not an unreasonable request.

Personally, I usually deselect everything to start then only select things I want to rip. This avoids the situation the OP has.

I suppose, however, if you want everything except duplicates, you're left sorting through the whole mess either way.

I'm not a blu ray expert but as I understand it there is the possibility that BD-J code references m2ts files as well as the MovieObject.bdmv itself (please correct me if I'm wrong). As I understand it MakeMKV does not discover these m2ts files contained in these structures and instead scans the m2ts list and presents all entries (pruning some obvious duplicates via mpls). So it's entirely possible it's not junk. I've also found some hidden non-referenced items at times too (rarely). So my strategy has been to eliminate m2ts reference in mpls files but back up non-referenced m2ts entries to see if there's there's anything useful. Most times it's garbage warning stuff but sometimes it's not.

I actually think its pruning is a bug, not a feature. Its impossible to know what's the right thing to prune. As its giving us info from the mpls files, it be better if it just listed each mpls file without any filtering, even in the presence of duplicates. Give us the ability to filter and sort it on our own (sort by name, sort by size/time, filter by regex name). Would be much more valuable to me personally than the blackbox filtering it does by itself right now. Heck can even provide a checkbox to implement its blackbox filtering on its own as today for those that want it (and even make it the default)
