I bought a used LG WH14NS40 which the seller described as being in good condition, but it was dead on arrival. I received a refund and am keeping the drive.
It does not mount DVDs or blu-rays. When a disc is inserted the drive performs the usual initial mechanical action but does not continue with it. The drive is visible to the Windows host computer, but no disc is seen. I checked the interior for broken/loose parts/connections and I cleaned both laser lenses.
My guess is that the problem is not with laser burnout (both of them). When the package arrived, one of the sturdy plastic tabs for the faceplate had broken off and was rattling around inside. That could indicate a bad drop in transit.
Any ideas what to try repairing?
