Need some advice

Post by jjw2008 »

I originally backed my library years ago. That was all DVDs so I never had an issue during that process.

Fast forward a decade or so and I want to update my library, but now it has blurays. I have backed up several bluray without issues, but now it seems almost every disc I try seems to have an issue.

I have spent several days going through the forums, I learned about libre drives and I believe I have one. It's a MT1939 platform, my understanding it doesn't do UHD discs, but that's not a problem, every disc I have is a standard 1080p bluray. It has the original firmware, I saw a post from someone else that Billy replied said leave the firmware alone, so not going down that rabbit hole for a newbie heh.

I wanted to support MakeMKV so I bought a key at the end of July and then got a refund the next day. Not a big deal, I'll patiently wait for Mike to update the beta key and supply new ones. Hope he's ok.

Here's the drive I have...

Here's the error logs I get...

Backup done but 1 files failed hash check

General questions.
- If the backup process gets one error, can i still convert it to MP4 with handbrake?
- What's the acceptable percentage error rate?
- Should I delete and start over until there is zero errors?
- I just bought these drives brand new. It shouldn't be defective.
- Is this a good drive?
- Should I get a different drive? I don't need UHD, all my blurays are 1080p.

Thanks in advance.

It depends on if the file that failed to copy is important. Is that file the FBI warning? Or the movie/episode of the show? Generally MakeMKV will only copy files it can correctly read 100%. If it fails reading, MakeMKV generally deletes the bad/broken/incomplete file.

The standard advice is to gently clean the disc and try again.

As a side note, Handbrake can output into .mkv files as well. MKV files are a generally more versatile container than MP4 and most players can play .mkv files as well as .mp4 files.

The optics on drives can get dirty over time. If you're willing to take your drive apart, they can be cleaned with a Q-tip and isopropyl alcohol.

The drive is probably fine. These days, Pioneer drives are considered the best, but since Pioneer recently got out of the optical drive business, it is getting hard to find a Pioneer drive at all. Finding one with the proper firmware to support LibreDrive is even harder.

Thanks Dcoke22 for taking the time to reply.

I don't know what file it's failing on. I still new to MakeMKV so haven't dived into the logs on these failures just yet. Wanted to get community feedback first.

I've seen lots of comments about cleaning the disc, these discs are spotless. But for argument sake's I'll try that.

When I say the drive is brand new, I've bought the drive less than 72 hours heh. I would be surprised if the lens was dirty. I'm not afraid to take it apart and clean them, but again, they are 72 hours old.

Good to know about Pioneer getting harder and harder to find.

I'd love to get the rest of my library backed up. Hoping I can work through this. Thanks for your input, would love to hear if someone else has additional feedback. Thanks again!

The MT1939 platform is not new. There are others here who can give a more authoritative answer, but to my knowledge, LG hasn't made MT1939 stuff for years. An actual new ASUS BW-16D1HT would have the MT1959 platform and be able to be flashed to support ripping UHD. I assumed, wrongly it seems, that since your platform was MT1939, that was just the drive you had from before.

Dcoke22, no worries. I understand why you assumed they were very old.

I was a little surprised I found the drive to be honest. My guess is, it was sitting on the store shelf for a very long time because no one orders optical drives now a days lol.

I'll keep experimenting and seeing what works. For giggles I'm trying to save the file to another drive, just in case the raid array I was using to save the MKV files to is starting to go on me. I haven't seen anything to support that, but i'm at the process of elimination stage right now heh.

I'm also getting a M2TS hash check error on a brand-new UHD Blu-Ray, when previously I was not getting any errors of the sort. My disc drive is only about a year and a half old, so I'm really not sure what the problem is. I'll also try cleaning mine out, but I wanted to comment to say you're not alone!
