MakeMKV v1.17.8 ripping very slow with HDD based mkv's

Post by A_Man_Eating_Duck »

I'm seeing some really weird slowness with v1.17.8 when ripping\processing MKV's that are on my nvme drives. For some reason the processing speed drops to sub 5.0x. When i cancel the job and close the GUI there is still the Makemkv console application.exe process running in the background taking up 15-20% of the CPU.

This is processing the same file with the different versions.
v1.17.8 it's processing at ~7.8 M/s [1.8x], it will take 48+ minutes (didn't want to wait for it to finish)

v1.17.6 is processing at 1028 M/s [239.9x], finishes in 23 seconds.

Not sure what is going on with v1.17.8 but it's the first time I've see this weirdness in many many years of using this excellent software.

OS details: Windows 11 24H2

You are using MakeMKV to rip an MKV to an MKV?
Are you doing this to alter the contents?
Remove audio or subtitle streams?

I never tried using MakeMKV to rip an MKV to an MKV so never experienced your issue.
While I cannot presently use MakeMKV until my issue is solved, I can possibly test after my issue is fixed.
At the very least I could test if I also experience your issue.

Yup, I'm using MakeMKV to strip out and unneeded languages for audio and subtitle, also to strip out the Lossless audio (7.1,6.1). I find it quicker than using Mkvtoolnix to do the same processing. I then shrink them down with Staxrip.

just really weird that there is such a massive speed difference between the 2 versions using the same settings.

I can't repeat this, it's working fine for me.

However, looking around here at the problems posted, I'm thinking that 1.17.8 for any platform is... not good.

I had the same issue. I had just updated my TrueNAS to the new version and this started. I thought it was my server.

It does it both on Bluray ripping AND MKV to MKV. It starts out fast and quickly drops and then over time it just keeps getting slower and slower. I was at 400KB/sec at one point. I even tried copying it to my local storage and then trying to rip it. Same thing. The only thing I didn't attempt was going Local storage to Local storage.

I'm running Windows 11 24H2 and it's ripping from a TrueNAS SMB share to a different SMB share through a 10Gb local network. Sustained transfers of near 800MB/sec when doing a copy from one to the other through Windows. MakeMKV will start at about 400MB/sec and then quickly drop to about 30MB/sec (within 5 - 10 sec) and then will just keep dropping after that. I let a file go for 6.5 hours and came back to it at the 400KB/sec transfer speed. I just cancelled it and then decided to roll back to 3.17.6. Everything works now.

I have the same problem. I have downgraded to 1.17.6 and the problem went away. You can find the old versions here https://www.makemkv.com/download/old/ .

I have also had to revert back to v1.17.6 because when ripping anything with TrueHD to FLAC it was reducing the speed right down to almost nothing. Initially I thought it was just with files already on the HDD, but its the same with both 4K and standard Blu-ray discs. And the issue was the exact same on two different computers. I keep DTS-HD MA as my devices can play it and when ripping movies with that the issue wasn't there, so maybe it's a problem with the FLAC conversion. I didn't try ripping with untouched TrueHD or with converting DTS-HD MA to FLAC, so I can't be sure. Anyway, whatever the problem is, it isn't present in v1.17.6 as it works totally normally again now I've reverted.

I've done a little troubleshooting as I was coming into the same issue.

Alien Romulus 4K (UK Disc):
The issue occurs if I choose to convert the main 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos track to FLAC. The following error appears: FFMPEG_ERROR: FFDEC000: [truehd @ 0000018483C56AE0] quant_step_size larger than huff_lsbs
The issue does not occur if I choose to convert the 'core' DD 5.1 to FLAC.

Signs 4K (UK Disc):
The issue does not occur whilst converting the DTS HD Master Audio to FLAC.

South Park Bigger Longer and Uncut 4K (US Disc):
The issue does not occur when converting the 5.1 Dolby TrueHD to FLAC.

So the issue may be Atmos tracks? Or at least TrueHD 7.1?

Read the Hashed Keys section of the UHD FAQ.

MakeMKV can download 'hashed keys' so as to decrypt new 4K UHDs. No version update is required.

I'm having exactly the same problem with 1.7.8 ripping mkv from one NVME drive to another on the same Bus (Yes I do this to remove unwanted audio streams amongst other things).

It starts fine but as soon as it fills the Ram it slows right down to about 4x, cancelling the job leaves a process running eating resources as the OP reported, it certainly didn't happen with the previous version.

In addition to this if I rip from a NVME to a NVME drive over a SMB network it slows down to approx. 0.7x

For info I can run the same process in MKV tool nix at blazing fast speed either on the same PC or over the Network.
