MakeMKV assigns wrong name to subtitle track

Post by RAHRL »

I have more and more occurrences of MakeMKV assigning the wrong language name to the subtitle track.

i.e. The video has Dutch subtitles, but in VLC or Kodi the language name comes up as English or Engels. When the subtitle track is selected, it is actually in Dutch, not in English.

This is a nuisance, not only because it is wrong, but also because I have Dutch subtitles as a default in Kodi and Kodi triggers on the name of the subtitle track. So it won't use the subtitle track by default, if it has a name other than Dutch or Nederlands.

It might be possible to check this before ripping the dvd somehow, but that could be a lot of work and it's no solution for the ones I already have ripped.
Googling on the subject suggests that I should convert the entire mkv file with Handbrake, which would take a lot of time. I can not imagine there is no simpler solution for renaming a subtitle track that is otherwise correct and in sync.

I am still using MakeMKV 1.17.4, very few other complaints about the software.

I'm sure someone here who knows their way around MakeMKV more thoroughly may be able to tell you how to get it to rip/name the subs stream correctly first time. For the ones you have already ripped, what you want to achieve is easy in MKVToolNix GUI header editor. In addition to changing the language code you can also set default streams, though support can be sketchy in different players. Also, as using the header editor doesn't require a remux it's quick.

Screenshot Below:
1). Open file in the header editor.
2). Choose Language in the subtitle stream you wish to change.
3). Open edit language dialog.
4). Choose language.
5). OK to apply the change.
6). Save from the Header Editor menu.

If you're into the command line, you can skip the MKVToolNix GUI and use the command line utility mkvpropedit, which is also part of the MKVToolNix tools.

Using mkvpropedit to change the 'Language' field of a subtitle track in a .mkv to Dutch would look like:

Code: Select all

mkvpropedit input.mkv --edit track:s1 --set language=dut
  • input.mkv is the .mkv file being edited
  • --edit track:s1 is the selector of the track to edit, in this case subtitle track 1. If you need to change the second subtitle track, it would be --edit track:s2
  • --set language=dut sets the language element (of the track specified by the previous selector) to the language represented by the 3 digit language code according to ISO 639-2.

Does anybody have a decent and secure link for downloading mkvtoolnix for Windows?

For some reason I always end up here:
https://mkvtoolnix.download/
or somewhere on GitHub where the code needs compilation.
