480i DVDs flagged as 480P

Post by phast_geek »

I am using Plex to play back my MKV files and have noticed that 480i rips (such at TV shows) are flagged as 480P and therefore are not de-interlaced properly in playback without the hassle of manual settings. Is there a way for the files to be flagged properly? I guess the problem could be Plex as well...

Anyone else tackled this? :?:

I have ripped around 200 DVDs and ~10 blu-rays so far with MakeMKV. The majority have been TV series where I expect to get a lot of interlaced material. So far all interlaced or progressive input has resulted in interlaced or progressive output.

My sources are mostly PAL, 576i/p.

Can you try MediaInfo on the files and see what that reports?

It seems that Plex may be the issue. The MKV files are correctly labelled according to Media Inspector, but for some reason Plex reports them as 480P. I guess I need to search in another forum...

On the bright side - I changed my Mac mini to 1080i from 1080P and that forces my external processor to de-interlace (I don't like the software solutions). Works perfectly despite the mis-labelling - motion artifacts are gone.

Plex might as well report 480p, since I doesn't currently deinterlace*. Maybe when the Plex team gets around to fixing things they will implement some sort of deinterlacing.

Then again I'm using a custom version based on 0.9.1.2 so that I can get a good audio sync with SD MKVs.

*This may have been fixed, but since they are still blaming MakeMKV for the SD A/V sync issues, I haven't updated.

It does de-interlace if selected, but not as well as my Statement D2v.

I have not have the crashes (Plex has crashed, but not with this).

Best results with interlaced DVDs for me is setting resolution to 480i on Mac Mini and restarting Plex so my external scaler does the work. I still see no option in Plex to turn off scaling as well as de-interlacing, but in theory there should be no scaler activity at 480i for a standard DVD... in theory.
