I'm pretty sure Woodstock is talking about Shingled Magnetic Recording, usually abbreviated as SMR. This is in contrast to Convention Magnetic Recording, CMR. https://kb.synology.com/en-us/DSM/tutor ... isk_drives The short version is the write performance of SMR is (very) bad in some situations. Generally speaking, SMR drives are best avoided.

Yeah, I got the TLA (three letter acronym) mixed up. Too many of them floating around.
