Java and makeMKV

Post by leosantare »

It seems like most would recommend installing Java for using makeMKV.
Why is installing Java recommended, is it really required?

For example, I have been ripping discs for years without Java and never had a problem. I just realized there was such a thing.

I am aware of the following link and have read it multiple times.
I just wanted to see how many makeMKV users actually use Java and recommend it.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by fake playlist protection. For discs that have this, are you unable to open them or rip them without Java? Any images of this?

I just hate to have software that I don't need, and I'm not convinced that I need it.

Anybody else?

Thank you,

you dont need it but there would be 100's or 1000's of playlist all of a similar or same length just in a jumbled movie order and only 1 is right

Is this what you are referring to?
Below are screenshots of Lionsgate's Midsommar, HD Blu-ray disc.

The one "without Java" has the same entry over and over.
(However, I just picked the top one and everything came out fine.)

The one "with Java" also has the same entry over and over but distinguishes some of them in parentheses.

Is this the only reason why Java is recommended?

Thank you,

I guess even for someone who only intends to rip UHD, Java is still recommended.

Thanks for pointing out that you don't actually need it.
