I just bought the Archgon Premium Aluminum External USB 3.0 UHD 4K Blu-Ray Writer Super Drive for PC and Mac. I'm new to ripping 4K discs, but that's what I bought it for. blah, blah, blah... - there is no GUI or "menu" for flashing on macOS or Linux. The only GUI for flashing is the SDFtool.exe app for Windows, and it is simply a GUI wrapper for the command line sdftool executable part of MakeMKV.


That's not even a true statement! There IS a GUI that flashes ...

"SDFtool Flasher" is a Graphical User Interface frontend for "makemkvcon f"/"sdftool" made by MartyMcNuts for flashing/dumping firmware (LG MT1959 Blu-ray drives only).

Mmm... you may want to consider editing (or deleting) this post... I don't think it's accurate.

I've done a bit more "poking around" in my macOS in an effort to prepare for and clearly understand the firmware flashing process. Can someone tell me what is the function of this (sdftool) file? It's listed as a "Linux executable":

The ASUS (Pioneer) was automatically libredrive enabled once MakeMKV's internal SDF was updated to include that firmware version. With the Buffalo (LG), that firmware version is not natively supported by ...

... The "specs" on both drives as displayed in MakeMKV are provided below... Note that the Buffalo drive says that Libre drive is "Possible, not yet enabled" . But I do not recall doing anything to enable the Asus drive! I guessed that this happened "automatically"??

And apologies for my ignorance, but I've just looked over the MakeMKV menu again, and I could find nothing re. flashing my drives. Is there an explanation posted ...

It looks good! But I'd prefer to be able to do this from the MakeMKV app itself... as some here have said can be done. I've been trying to find some instructions for how to do that, but the replies I've gotten have not helped... it's almost like this is some sort of "insider secret" ?
