You can even do your own quality checks with your drive. To do so flash it to WH60NS58 1.V5. Download this proggie:

As long as you only use 25GB discs you are fine and you shouldn't worry too much about the drive warming up. A 50GB disc is a different animal and especially LG / ASUS drives are not the best burners for those. If you burn them use this method.

I doubt a firmware update would make any difference with regards to writing discs. It's normal for a drive to warm up as it is doing a lot of work. Just leave the tray open for 5 mins after writing a disc before moving on to the next one. This gives you a few minutes to grab a cuppa or go to the ...
