Re: Advice for new optical drive purchase
Best buy in USA has few in store stock of LG Model: BP50NB40 SKU: 9243009 No longer available for shipping On sale for $92 Good info, as I see a few around in the stores. Question: Does this generally work with makemkv out of the box for non-UHD blu-ray discs? Looking for a 2nd drive to use with ma...

no longer reading 2-layer discs
I have a pioneer BDR-206, bought back in 2011, used for many years, but not used in the last few years; I plugged it back in recently, and it looks like it now will mount only some BDs -- after testing 30 discs, it looks like the few it mounts successfully are all 1 layer discs, and the many it does...

Re: WH16NS40 But I think I'm in Trouble
It as manufactured in February 2024! I've learned that we can't trust the labels from ebay (esp china sellers, but in my case also a US seller). Those drives (WH16NS40 platform 1939, SVC code NS40) haven't been made since 2015 or so, and so a label that says eg in my case "2024" ends up b...

The "MT1939" drive platform means it can't be flashed to support UHD.MuzzyKlips wrote: ↑Fri Nov 21, 2025 12:44 amI bought an LG WH16NS40 off Ebay and MakeMKV shows information below. It appears I can watch and rip regular Blu Ray Discs, but not 4K UHD ones. Is there any fix?
Drive platform: MT1939

Re: LG WH16NS40 not responding to SDFTool_Flasher
For the Pioneers, could you explain which ones are good for UHD? I've read the firmware flashing guide and the updates regarding Pioneer but I still can't tell which generations of Pioneer drives are fine. It sounds like there was awhile while Pioneers couldn't be flashed but that the new ones bein...

Re: LG WH16NS40 not responding to SDFTool_Flasher
Are those slim drives pretty reliable? I assumed that the old internal ones would outlast time itself but that the slims would be questionable. I've only had mine for a couple weeks so I can't speak to its long term condition. I've always preferred the traditional internal drives as they feel so mu...

Re: LG WH16NS40 not responding to SDFTool_Flasher
Sadly, iirc, I think it reported as MT1939 previously in the 2nd block of info that's no longer there. I'm gathering that I'm basically screwed and that this is one of those scam old chinesium drives. :( Yeah if it's drive platform MT1939 then there's no flashing it for UHD. A flashable WH16NS40 fo...

Re: LG WH16NS40 not responding to SDFTool_Flasher
Thanks for the fast response. That didn't change the behavior. I have the SDFtool 1.3.6 copied to the default install directory of MakeMKV (running as admin too). It's telling me too that the platform isn't MT1959 and doesn't support flashing (though I don't know how it did anything in the first pl...

Re: WH14NS40 svc NS40, from 2024 ??
Lots of these fakes are coming from China. They are the older pre 2016 MT1939 drives with SVC NS40 with a new sticker slapped on them. Thanks Marty. Is there a good reference for the NS40 not being made after 2015 that I can point to? And so for legitimate LG drives: is it the case that both dates ...

WH14NS40 svc NS40, from 2024 ??
I just received this drive from ebay, from a US seller. (Note: If I had known it was an svc NS40 I would not have ordered it). But an svc NS40, manufactured in 2024 -- does that make sense? I thought they changed from svc NS40 to NS50 in 2015. Looking in more detail at photos in ebay I'm finding lot...

Re: Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2025
As a software engineer, I'm trying to understand what's behind the scene regarding all the steps that are linked in the tutorial on first page. I do understand the need for a drive that can read Blu-Rays (duh), but then I fall a bit short on what the flashing step is supposed to be for. Can someone...

Re: Japan's Surging Demand for BD Drives?
I just saw the article myself a few minutes ago. I was wondering why LG drives were so hard to find now even though Pioneer is the one who left the market. (As far as I know I haven't seen announcements that LG has left the PC burner market; I have seen announcements that they left the home theater ...
