Does it always fail at the same offset? That usually indicates a flaw in the disk, or a dirty spot. Variable locations in the same general area often point to the drive speeding up beyond its power capabilities and shutting down. Often that can be "fixed" by slowing how fast the system can...

1.17.7 and 1.18.2 are versions of MakeMKV, which should NOT be flashed onto a drive.

ZIP does not throw data away. It is a "lossless" compression method.

Other compression methods cannot guarantee that. And ZIP is not the most efficient compression method of ways to compress cleanly.

Personally, I use mkvtoolnix for splitting files if I'm not going to encode them, but I use handbrake if I want them smaller. If disks don't have a lot of swapping around, handbrake is fine.
