Fully 5 years before UHD was a "thing", so highly unlikely. Probably doesn't even have a processor capable of decoding the UHD data.

More likely, they sold you a different drive and thought you wouldn't care about the model number.

Anything that uses the CPU to its maximum will heat it up. And handbrake uses it at the maximum rate. So will any other encoder, unless it is using special encoding hardware (like QSV or the various similar hardware encoders). Throwing a guess out here, given that the rip failed fairly deep into the disk, that the drive powered down. This happens fairly often with USB-powered drives when they start going very fast (consuming lots of electricity).

Guessing that being built over 4 years before UHD was invented affects the compatibility...

That drive was built 4+ years before UHD was created. Doubtful it would be able to do it.
