Re: random question: why does makemkv install to /usr/bin instead of /usr/local/bin?

You're going to have to ask Mike about that, but... Most programs I've installed on Linux either installed in the user's own directory, or /usr/bin if they are intended for more than one user.

Re: UHD Drive help

The problem is that there currently are no new drives being built that do UHD; everything that is available is "old stock". The last drives that were built by Pioneer are blocked from operating in UHD mode by their firmware if their firmware is newer than November of 2022. It's been almost...

Re: Public KeyDB Disc Submissions

Discs are brand new and pristine. Didn't spot a single mark on them. That wasn't the question. "NEW" DISKS CAN HAVE CONTAMINATION ON THEM. If the disk was in its packaging for more than 6 months before you tried ripping it, it could have accumulated a film that is difficult to see, but in...

Re: BETA-Key is not working anymore.

The key removes the license checks before certain features are turned on. With the expiring beta key, those checks fail after a certain length of time. They no longer fail with a "full key" that you get at registration.

Re: Expired Beta Key

MakeMKV only checks the date against key expiration when the program is loaded. A common dodge for the expired beta key is to set your system date to a date when the key WAS valid, start MakeMKV, then reset your date to current. Until you stop MakeMKV (it can sit quietly in your system tray between ...

Re: BETA-Key is not working anymore.

The beta key will be updated when the author is online next; you have the link to the message he updates with the key each time in your message. If you're waiting until the beta key runs out to finally pop for a license, I've been licensed for over a dozen years, and watched the beta key (for those ...

Re: Public KeyDB Disc Submissions

I don't think I could find any part of MakeMKV that could convert video files? :?:  I must be missing something but as far as I can tell it just seems to preserve/back-up videos from dvd's? What about the BIG BUTTON that is shaped like a disk? Clicking on that will do the default action of con...

Re: Flashing a new drive

It's really necessary to know what KIND of drive it is, as in the model number and firmware that is in it.

What does MakeMKV say in the LibreDrive information about it?

Re: Surround 5.1 or 7.1 Not Supported

Not knowing what title you're talking about, it is really only possible to offer generalizations. Are you manually selecting which tracks to pull? Is it an "old movie", like a classic, originally shown in the days of stereo or earlier? Some films only have stereo or two-track mono audio fo...

Re: How to remove empty space in MKV files?

Have you tried tools like Handbrake to recode the files to be smaller? "Empty space" is hard to define, because it's rarely "empty". But recoding a MKV file, as ripped from a DVD or BD, to a smaller MKV file can make it anywhere from 10% to 90% smaller at the same resolution. Typ...

Re: New here, need some help

(just a note to say, language tracks are not always labeled correctly. I had one series where the "all subtitles" track was tagged as Japanese language, despite being English. My guess is the author only expected it to be used if someone select Japanese as the audio language, especially si...

Re: New here, need some help

I will say this about subtitles - they're not always found where you expect them, especially in popular movies. I will use the example of Star Trek movies. Some places with obvious alien speech (when Klingons are discussing things), there are no subtitles on the screen; it's only when it is importan...

It's not a feature available on PHPbb, so I do not think it could be added.

Did you also email the file to svq@makemkv.com, so that it can be incorporated into MakeMKV?

Re: Regarding subtitles

Depending on your player, you can copy DVD "vobsub" subtitles in as track on a Bluray MKV file, and they will play just fine. MKVToolnix is the utility to do this with. I used to do it when my TV wouldn't play the PGS subtitles found in Bluray disks, but haven't needed it since I upgraded ...
