Re: Makemkv on Win XP
Security is an illusion. If someone is attacking your system, very few among us have the skills to stop all attackers. It all comes down to how you use the systems and how you expose them to the outside world.

Re: North by Northwest
OK, basically your drive is having a hard time reading the disk, at an area that would be near the edge. Most likely cause is a blemish or fingerprint, as the more common cause (haze on the disk from storage) would be more wide-spread.

I guess I am not attaching any photos at all. Let me try again.

Re: MakeMKV Not Downloading SDF File
Most likely your system is blocking contact with the SDF server, which, unfortunately, is getting increasingly common. The server is actually where you're seeing this message, but... it's hidden by cloudflare, which doesn't do that for the update process.

The "Too Old" comes from how it handles expired serial numbers - if you put the current serial number in the beta versions, it will work just fine.

Re: Does ripping a disc (dvd or bluray) change the original at all?
You would have to hear from others if flashing the drive changed write behavior. I've seen messages where people complained that they couldn't write, others that said it worked great. I haven't had to flash any drives I use, so I cannot say.

Re: Does ripping a disc (dvd or bluray) change the original at all?
The question of writable disks "should not" come up when ripping disks. I put that in quotes because sometimes the "original" disks comes to you as a copy that was burned onto a writable disk. Think low-volume DVDs for legal stuff (RightStuf used to do that) and pirated stuff more generally ...

Re: Does ripping a disc (dvd or bluray) change the original at all?
Unless your reading drive has write capabilities AND it is reading a writable disk, it's simply not possible.
Well, it is possible that the laser could scratch the disk (a problem with some older drives with misaligned laser assemblies), but generally no.

One problem with this is that sometimes, the retries aren't in MakeMKV's hands. The operating system controls retries most of the time, and it's only after the OS gives up that the retry settings in MakeMKV become a factor.

There is also the possibility that the blue laser failed. That other disk was a BD, hopefully, to test that.

"No disk" typically means that nothing was detected in the drive. Have you tried cleaning the disk, then retrying?

Re: Frank Marino - Agora audio codec?
Normally, it will say on the label what codecs are used. Taking a typical BD movie disk from the pile behind me, there is a section of the back that specifies that English is available as "DTS-HD Master Audio", which means that DTS-HD Master Audio is the MOST COMPLEX audio... but, under normal ...
